Magin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DOI Number XXX-YYY-ZZZ<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference Number HiSST-2022-305<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strong shock experienced by a spacecraft entering the atmosphere leads to the formation of a highly<br>reactive boundary layer that interacts with its surface through chemical reactions and heat exchange.<br>From a numerical prospective, these gas-surface interactions can be modeled as a boundary condition<br>that allows to compute macroscopic properties, such as temperature and recession rates. Mass and<br>energy conservation is imposed at the surface. In the present work, an ablative surface was numerically<br>simulated. Since a two-temperature model was employed to describe the flowfield, a surface vibrational<br>energy balance was derived. It was compared with two extreme cases: surface in thermal equilibrium<br>and surface vibrationally adiabatic. Results shows that considering surface vibrational energy relaxation<br>has an important impact on the surface temperature and on the recession rate.
