Multiple methods for design, construction, calibration and testing of thin film platinum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) are described. By depositing a thin film of platinum on the surface of a highly polished Pyrex or polyimide substrate, RTDs were obtained which have a temperature coefficient of resistivity of 0.0025K-1, an adequate linear behavior. The RTDs were tested to determine their feasibility for surface temperature and heat transfer rates under hypersonic flow in shock tunnel or gun tunnel. The results from shock tunnel tests show that the RTDs had a time response on the order of microseconds, making them suitable for heat transfer measurement in hypersonic aerothermodynamics test. The current challenges of instrumentation technology are to further develop systems packaging and component testing of specialized sensors, further develop instrumentation techniques on complex surfaces, improve sensor durability.
