The primary purpose of a hinged wing tip on an airliner aircraft is to allow an aerodynamically efficient high aspect ratio wing to enter an airport gate of standard dimensions. There exists a potential opportunity to allow a wing tip to move in flight to alleviate the loads and achieve a lower wing weight – or enable the wing span to be maximised. This technology has become known as the “Semi Aeroelastic Hinge”. This paper will present the AlbatrossONE Semi Aeroelastic Hinge small scale demonstrator aircraft and the results from the wind tunnel tests and the first flight tests.
