The purpose of this paper is to present the design of a test bench and the subsequent test campaign conducted in an effort to measure the extra drag due to a rough surface in a supersonic flow. Using this test bench, the drag associated with roughnesses sizing from ~1μm to 65μm, generated by commercial sand papers, has been tested in the ONERA R1Ch wind tunnel at Mach number 3. Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes simulations of the flow have been conducted taking into account the roughness contribution through a roughness correction model. The numerical and experimental results are compared and the link between the size of the roughness and the equivalent sand grain roughness is discussed.
