Rotating detonation engines are an effective means of utilizing detonation combustion in a wide variety of (aerospace) engines. The greater thermodynamic efficiency of detonative combustion as compared to deflagrative combustion can be used to fly farther, faster or longer with the same amount of fuel, an attractive prospect in many applications. In order to be able to leverage this technology into the future, an exploratory research effort has been conducted at TNO in The Netherlands, aimed at gaining hands-on experience with this novel technology. This paper will present an overview of the efforts conducted by TNO so far, which primarily comprise the design, manufacture and initial testing of a modular, air/hydrogen powered, RDE. The paper will describe the test facility, instrumentation setup, initial test results and anticipated future work.
