In this work, solutions for atmospheric reentries of two objects are generated: a generic hypersonic glide vehicle and the FIRE II capsule at the 1648s flight point. Solutions for the flow field are computed with a coupled Euler-boundary layer method. The Euler method is in thermo-chemical nonequilibrium; the boundary layer method is second-order and in equilibrium or chemical nonequilibrium. An 11-species model allows for ionisation in the inviscid solution. The radiation in the flow field is computed with a Photon Monte Carlo method and fed back to the Euler method as a source term. The influence of radiation on the flow field is discussed. A comparison between a 5-species and an 11-species model is made and the importance of considering ions is pointed out.
